This is the first time that I have overtly made myself the subject of my work. Rather than aiming for a self portrait, it has been an exercise in self-examination, and a means to explore and discover how my adult self was formed and what is important to me now. It has been several years in the making. Cut paper animation is a lengthy process, which together with the collection and collaging of imagery, provides space for reflection and revelation. Whatever I find our about myself through this conversation with the work, it also becomes – as artist Nan Golding has observed - a way of hanging on to yourself.
